Move Toward What Matters

Action despite discomfort

We as human beings are running away from ourselves. ACT is about turning around and facing your life.
— Dr. Steven C. Hayes

You don't need to feel ready or fearless to take meaningful action.

The short version

Courage is fear packed in your suitcase alongside you.

Let's unpack this

We have it backwards. We think we need to feel calm, confident, and certain before we act. But action comes first; feelings follow. The most courageous people aren't the ones who don't feel fear — they're the ones who feel it and move anyway. Your life expands in the direction of your willingness to be uncomfortable. If you wait for the fear to disappear before taking the step, you'll be waiting forever.

Someone else felt this too

He who is not everyday conquering some fear has not learned the secret of life.
— Ralph Waldo Emerson

How this works in practice

Action comes before motivation, not after. If you wait until you feel ready, you'll be waiting forever. Change what you do first, and your mind will eventually catch up.

How this helps with the people in your life

  • Have the hard conversation even though your stomach knots up.
  • Being vulnerable isn't weakness — it's moving toward connection despite the risk.
  • Don't wait until you feel "ready" to be present with loved ones.
